Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from 306 to 337 CE and became sole emperor after defeating Licinius in 324 CE. His reign brought significant political and religious changes, including support for Christianity and the establishment of Constantinople as a new imperial capital. He strengthened the army and reorganized imperial administration. His monetary reforms also influenced Roman currency, while bronze coins continued to serve everyday commercial needs across the empire.
Coinage Note: This bronze Nummus was struck at Antioch between 335 and 337 CE. The reverse celebrates the strength and unity of the Roman army through the “GLORIA EXERCITVS” design, featuring two soldiers and a military standard. The “SMAN” mintmark identifies the Antioch mint. This issue represents the late phase of Constantine I’s coinage and the military imagery common in the Constantinian period.
