Description

Roman Empire, Emperor: Constantine I the Great, Reign: 306-337 CE, Denomination: Nummus / Follis, Composition: Bronze, Weight: 2.96 grams, Diameter: 18.25 mm (irregular shape), Mint: Treveri (Trier), Germany, Reference: RIC VII Trier 475, Grade: About Extremely Fine, this coin is rarely found in India.

Obverse: Laureate head of Constantine I facing right, surrounded by the imperial inscription identifying him as Augustus.

Reverse: Camp gate with two towers, with a star above and the mintmark “PTR” followed by a pellet within a crescent, surrounded by the legend “PROVIDENTIAE AVGG.”

Constantine I, known as Constantine the Great, ruled the Roman Empire from 306 to 337 CE. He defeated his rivals and reunified the empire under his authority, most notably after his victory over Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 CE. He later founded Constantinople as a new imperial capital and supported Christianity, significantly influencing Roman political and religious history. His monetary reforms helped establish a standardized bronze coinage system used throughout the empire.

Coinage Note: This reduced bronze Nummus was struck at the Treveri mint, modern-day Trier, during Constantine I’s reign. The camp-gate reverse, accompanied by the legend “PROVIDENTIAE AVGG,” symbolized imperial foresight and stability. The mintmark “PTR” identifies the Trier mint, while the pellet and crescent serve as additional issue marks. Such coins circulated widely in the fourth-century Roman economy.
