Description

Paramara-associated Gadhaiya Paisa, Rajputana and Gujarat Region, Denomination: 1 Drachm, Composition: Silver, Weight: 4.26 grams, Diameter: 14 mm, Period: c. 950–1050 CE, Reference: Mitchiner Non-Islamic #427, Extremely Fine, Scarce.

Obverse: Stylized Indo-Sasanian bust facing right, wearing the characteristic sun-and-moon crown, surrounded by elaborate abstract ornamental elements and pellet decoration.

Reverse: Stylized Sasanian-inspired fire altar in the centre, with a crescent moon in the upper-right field and surrounding decorative motifs.
The Gadhaiya Paisa represents one of the most distinctive surviving traditions of Indo-Sasanian-inspired coinage in medieval western India. This variety is associated with the Paramara sphere of Rajputana and Gujarat and is dated approximately to the 10th–11th century. The Paramaras were an important Rajput dynasty whose principal territories centred on Malwa, with Dhar emerging as a major political and cultural centre. Gadhaiya coinage continued the visual tradition of earlier Sasanian silver currency, but the original portrait and fire-altar designs became increasingly stylized and abstract over time. These coins circulated widely and demonstrate the long-lasting influence of Sasanian monetary designs on medieval Indian coinage.
Coinage Note: This silver Gadhaiya Paisa / Drachm belongs to the Paramara-associated series of Rajputana and Gujarat, dated approximately 950–1050 CE. The coin preserves the classic Indo-Sasanian bust with sun-and-moon crown on the obverse and a stylized fire altar with crescent moon on the reverse. The type is recorded as Mitchiner Non-Islamic #427.
