Description

Roman Empire, Emperor: Constantine II (Caesar, 317-337 CE), Denomination: Nummus / Follis, Composition: Bronze, Weight: 3.19 grams, Diameter: 18 mm, Mint: Londinium (London), References: RIC VII# 292, OCRE# ric.7.lon.292, About Very Fine, This coin is rarely found in India.

Obverse: Laureate head of Constantine II facing right, surrounded by the Latin inscription “CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C,” meaning “Constantine the Younger, Most Noble Caesar.”

Reverse: Vows inscription “CAESARVM NOSTRORVM VOT / X” enclosed within a laurel wreath, commemorating vows for the tenth anniversary of the emperors’ reign. The mintmark “PLON,” followed by a crescent, appears below.

Constantine II was the eldest son of Constantine the Great and was appointed Caesar in 317 CE. During his father’s reign, he held authority over parts of the western Roman Empire, including Gaul, Britain, and Hispania. The Constantinian dynasty played a major role in reshaping the Roman Empire during the early fourth century, particularly through military reforms, administrative changes, and the promotion of Christianity. Coins issued in Constantine II’s name helped communicate imperial authority and celebrate dynastic continuity throughout the empire.

Coinage Note: This bronze Nummus was struck at Londinium, the Roman name for present-day London, during 323-324 CE. Its reverse legend commemorates the imperial vows associated with the tenth anniversary of the Caesars’ reign. The laurel wreath, Latin inscriptions, and mintmark reflect the standardized Roman coinage system and its role in expressing imperial loyalty and authority.
