Description

Western Satraps (Indo-Scythian Kingdom), Ruler: Visvasimha, Reign: c. 275–280 CE, Denomination: 1 Drachm, Composition: Silver, Weight: 2.26 grams, Diameter: 14 mm, Reference: ACR# 3404, About Extremely Fine, Very Rare.

Obverse: Head of king facing right with date behind.
Reverse: Chaitya (three-arched hill) with river below, crescent moon and sun above; Brahmi legend around.
The reign of Visvasimha belongs to the closing phase of Western Satrap authority in western India. A son of Mahakshatrapa Rudrasena II, Visvasimha first issued coins as Kshatrapa and later assumed the title of Mahakshatrapa. His silver drachms continued the long-established numismatic tradition of the dynasty, characterized by a royal portrait on the obverse and the sacred chaitya flanked by celestial symbols on the reverse. According to studies by E. J. Rapson and subsequent scholars, the coinage of Visvasimha is considerably scarcer than that of many earlier rulers, suggesting a relatively brief and possibly turbulent reign. These drachms circulated throughout Gujarat and Malwa, regions that had prospered through inland commerce and maritime trade with the western world. Today, the silver issues of Visvasimha are highly prized by collectors and provide valuable insight into the final centuries of Indo-Scythian rule in western India.
Coinage Note: Visvasimha was the eldest son of Rudrasena II and began issuing coins as Kshatrapa in Saka Era 197. His silver drachms are scarce, while issues bearing the title Mahakshatrapa are considered rare, making them particularly desirable among collectors of ancient Indian coinage.
