Valentinian I was one of the most capable military emperors of the Late Roman Empire, ruling from 364 to 375 CE. Following the death of Emperor Jovian, he was proclaimed emperor by the army and soon appointed his brother Valens as co-emperor to govern the Eastern Empire while he retained control of the West. Throughout his reign, Valentinian successfully defended the empire’s frontiers against invasions by the Alemanni, Quadi, and Sarmatians, strengthening the Rhine and Danube defenses through an extensive program of fortification. His administration emphasized military discipline, frontier security, and administrative reforms, helping to stabilize the Western Roman Empire during a period of increasing external pressure. His coinage, struck at numerous imperial mints, reflects the empire’s continued authority and the imperial ideals of security, victory, and stability.
Coinage Note: AE3 bronze coins of Valentinian I bearing the reverse legend “SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE” were produced at several imperial mints, including Siscia in present-day Croatia. Catalogued as RIC IX Siscia 7a, these issues feature the goddess Victory carrying a wreath and palm branch, symbolizing the restoration of public security and imperial success. The mintmark “DASISC” identifies the Siscia Mint, one of the principal mints serving the Western Roman Empire during the fourth century CE.
