Description

Nawabs of Arcot, In the name of Mabusu Khan, Denomination: Kasu, Composition: Copper, Weight: 1.83 grams, Diameter: 11 mm, Place of Discovery: Madurai, Reference: ICM #2413, About Very Fine, Extremely Rare.

Obverse: A decorative seven-petalled floral motif, with a small dot inside each petal and a central circular design.

Reverse: The name of Mabusu Khan, associated with the Arcot Nawabs, appears in Tamil script arranged in three lines.

Mabusu Khan (also spelled Mabus Khan) was a son of Nawab Anwaruddin Muhammed Khan and the brother of Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nawab of Arcot (Carnatic). Role and Campaigns: In the 1750s, during the Carnatic Wars, he served as a military commander and the Nawab’s representative/governor in the southern regions of Madurai and Tirunelveli to help collect revenues and suppress local Poligars (Palaiyagars) alongside British forces and Commander Colonel Alexander Heron.

Mabusu Khan was associated with the political struggles of the Carnatic region during the mid-eighteenth century, when the Nawabs of Arcot competed for regional authority amid conflicts involving the British East India Company, the French, and local powers. Coins attributed to this period can reflect regional monetary practices and the use of local scripts. The reported discovery location of Madurai may provide useful provenance, although it does not independently establish the mint or place of issue.

Coinage Note: This copper kasu coin, weighing approximately 1.83 grams, is attributed to Mabusu Khan of the Arcot Nawabs series. Featuring a distinctive seven-petalled floral design and Tamil inscription, this coin represents an interesting regional numismatic type. The type is listed in Tamil numismatic literature under the Arcot Nawabs series and is also documented on the Indian Coin Mart website under listing serial number ICM #2413, making it a noteworthy specimen for collectors of regional Indian coinage.
