King George V ruled the British Empire from 1910 to 1936 and was Emperor of India during a period of major political and social change. His reign witnessed the First World War (1914–1918), growing Indian nationalist movements, and the expansion of constitutional debates concerning self-government. The 1911 Delhi Durbar marked his coronation as Emperor of India and announced the transfer of the British Indian capital from Calcutta to Delhi. British India’s monetary system supported trade and administration across the subcontinent, with coins issued in several denominations for everyday transactions.
Coinage Note: This 2 Annas copper-nickel coin was issued in 1936 under King George V as part of British India’s circulating currency. Coins of this type were struck at both the Bombay 🔹 and Calcutta (Kolkata) mints. The present specimen is from the Bombay Mint. Its distinctive square shape with rounded corners sets it apart from many contemporary coins. The obverse features the crowned portrait of King George V, while the reverse displays the denomination in English and four Indian scripts, reflecting the linguistic diversity of British India. The coin is catalogued as KM#516.
