Obverse: Persian legend “Sikka Mubarak Badshah Ghazi Shahjahan” in elegant calligraphy, proclaiming Shahjahan II’s imperial authority and royal title.
Reverse: Persian inscription “Sana Ahad Julus” indicating the first regnal year, with Zarb Surat (Out of Flan) naming the Surat Mint at the bottom.
Shahjahan II, also known as Rafi-ud-Daulah successor in the Mughal succession, briefly held the imperial throne in 1719 during a period of political instability and powerful noble influence. His accession was orchestrated by the Sayyid Brothers, who exercised considerable control over Mughal court politics. The empire was weakening following the long reign of Aurangzeb, as regional powers and influential nobles increasingly challenged central authority. Shahjahan II’s reign lasted only a few months before his death in 1719, after which his cousin brother Rafi-ud-Darajat became emperor. Coins from this turbulent period reflect the continuation of Mughal imperial titles and monetary traditions despite declining political stability.
Coinage Note: This silver Rupee was struck at the Surat Mint in AH 1131, bearing the regnal designation “Ahad,” meaning the first year of rule. Its Persian inscriptions proclaim the emperor’s royal authority while identifying Surat as the mint of origin. Silver Rupees formed the backbone of Mughal commerce and revenue payments, circulating alongside gold Mohurs and copper Dam coins. Such issues from the brief reign of Shahjahan II are historically significant examples of the Mughal Empire’s early eighteenth-century coinage.
