Jalal ud-Din Muhammad Akbar (1556–1605 CE) succeeded his father Humayun and transformed the Mughal Empire into a powerful and well-administered state. Through campaigns in Gujarat, Bengal, Rajputana, Kashmir, and the Deccan, he greatly expanded imperial territory. His leading commanders included Raja Man Singh, Todar Mal, and Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khana. Akbar strengthened administration through the mansabdari and revenue systems, while maintaining important alliances with Rajput rulers. He commissioned major monuments including Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort. His court patronized literature, painting, and historical works such as the Akbarnama and Ain-i-Akbari.
Coinage Note: This scarce copper Dam, or Falus, was struck at Ahmedabad during Ilahi regnal year 4x, naming the month Ardibihisht. Akbar introduced the solar Ilahi calendar in 1584 CE. Ahmedabad was an important Mughal mint producing copper, silver, and gold coinage. Its elegant Persian calligraphy and dotted dividers reflect Akbar’s standardized monetary system, supporting taxation, commerce, and everyday transactions across the empire.
