Description
British Palestine, Period: (1927-1948 CE), Denomination: 5 Mils, Composition: Copper-Nickel, Weight: 2.90 grams, Diameter: 19.91 mm, Thickness: 1.34 mm, Shape: Round with a Central Hole, Reference: KM #3, Schön #3, About Very Fine, Collectible Historical Issues.
Obverse: A central hole encircled by a stylized olive wreath, surrounded by the name “Palestine” in Arabic, Hebrew, and English, with the date displayed in English and Arabic numerals, reflecting the multilingual identity of the British Mandate territory.
Reverse: The denomination “5 Mils” displayed in Arabic, Hebrew, and English around the central hole, with a large numeral “5” prominently featured, creating a distinctive and easily recognizable design.
The coinage of the British Mandate of Palestine was introduced in 1927 under British administration, establishing a standardized monetary system for the territory. The 5 Mils coin formed part of the Palestine Pound currency system, which was linked to the British Pound. Its distinctive central hole and olive wreath design set it apart from many contemporary coins, while inscriptions in Arabic, Hebrew, and English reflected the region’s multilingual character. Initially issued in copper-nickel, the 5 Mils denomination continued to circulate during the Mandate period, although copper coins were also introduced for this denomination in 1942 and 1944 during the Second World War to conserve nickel for wartime requirements. The British Mandate ended in 1948, bringing this monetary era to a close. Today, the 1935 Five Mils coin is valued by collectors as an early issue of Palestine Mandate coinage and an important historical artifact representing the region’s monetary, political, and cultural history.
