Bengal Presidency (British India), In the Name of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, (1759–1806 CE), Denomination: 1 Pice / 1 Pai, Composition: Copper, Weight: 6.21 grams, Diameter: 24 mm, Date: 37th regnal year, Reference: KM#28, About Extremely Fine, Rare.
Obverse: Persian inscription reads “Sana Julus 37 Shah Alam Badshah”, meaning the 37th regnal year of Emperor Shah Alam II, enclosed within a plain circular border.
Reverse: Persian and Devanagari inscriptions “Yek Pai Sikka / Ek Pai Sikka,” meaning “One Pice Coin,” arranged within a circular border.
Shah Alam II was the Mughal Emperor from 1759 to 1806 and ruled during a period when the Mughal Empire’s political authority was increasingly shared with regional powers and the British East India Company. Following the Battle of Buxar in 1764, the East India Company obtained the Diwani rights of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa from the Mughal emperor. Shah Alam II continued to issue coins in his name, preserving the traditional Mughal monetary authority while Company administration expanded across eastern India. His long reign witnessed major political changes, including the rise of British power and the gradual transformation of Mughal sovereignty.
Coinage Note: This copper 1 Pice was issued by the Bengal Presidency in RY 37 (1796 CE), corresponding to the 37th regnal year of Shah Alam II. The Persian obverse preserves the emperor’s traditional titulature, while the reverse combines Persian and Devanagari legends identifying the denomination as Yek Pai Sikka / Ek Pai Sikka. This coin represents the transitional character of late 18th-century Bengal coinage under Company administration.
