Ahom dynasty of Assam Kingdom Gaurinath Singha Half Rupee Silver Coin

Gaurinath Singha, also known by his Ahom name Suhitpangphaa, was the 35th ruler of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam and reigned from 1780 to 1794 CE. His reign occurred during one of the most turbulent periods in Ahom history, dominated by the continuing Moamoria rebellion and increasing political instability within the kingdom. The rebels eventually captured the Ahom capital of Rangpur in 1788, forcing Gaurinath Singha and the royal household to flee toward Gauhati.

Facing the growing rebellion, Gaurinath Singha sought outside military assistance, and a British East India Company force under Captain Thomas Welsh arrived in Assam. The British campaign helped restore royal control over Rangpur in 1794, shortly before Gaurinath Singha’s death later that year. His reign therefore represents a significant period in the weakening and decentralization of traditional Ahom authority.

The silver 1/2 Rupee of Gaurinath Singha is distinctly Ahom in character, with its octagonal flan, dotted border and Devanagari legends arranged in three lines. The small “Na” mark beneath the obverse legend is an important identifying feature of this KM #276 variety. The combination of traditional Ahom coin design with Sanskritic-Devanagari legends reflects the changing cultural and political character of the Ahom state during the late eighteenth century.
