Description

Mughal Empire, Jalal-ud-Din Muhammad Akbar (AH 963-1014, 1556-1605 CE), Denomination: 1 Rupee, Composition: Silver, Weight: 11.29 grams, Diameter: 22.92 mm, Mint: Lahore, Regnal Year: Ilahi 44, Month: Tir (Cancer), Reference: KM #93.11, Grade: About Extremely Fine, Rarity: Scarce.

Obverse: Arabic inscription “Jalla Jalalahu Allah hu Akbar” elegantly rendered in bold calligraphy, surrounded by a decorative border.
Reverse: Persian inscriptions naming the month “Tir” at the top, “Zarb Lahore” indicating the mint, and “Ilahi 44” below, framed by a beaded border.
Jalal-ud-Din Muhammad Akbar, the third Mughal emperor, ruled from 1556 to 1605 CE and transformed the empire through territorial expansion, administrative reforms, and cultural patronage. He consolidated Mughal authority across northern India and extended his dominion into Gujarat, Bengal, Kashmir, and parts of the Deccan. His leading nobles and commanders included Raja Man Singh, Raja Todar Mal, and Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan. Akbar strengthened governance through the mansabdari system and reforms in land revenue assessment. His court encouraged Persian literature, painting, and historical scholarship, including the Akbarnama and Ain-i-Akbari. His reign also saw the development of a distinctive imperial coinage and the introduction of the Ilahi calendar.
Coinage Note: This scarce silver Rupee was struck at the Lahore Mint in Ilahi regnal year 44, with the month of Tir, associated with Cancer, recorded on the reverse. Akbar’s Ilahi coinage reflects his distinctive calendrical system and imperial monetary reforms. The elegant Arabic and Persian inscriptions identify the emperor, mint, regnal year, and month. Lahore was an important Mughal political and commercial centre, and its mint produced coinage that supported trade and everyday transactions throughout the empire.
