Roman Empire Emperor Valentinian I 364-375 CE Bronze Coin Siscia Mint

Valentinian I was among the most successful military emperors of the Late Roman Empire, ruling the Western Empire from AD 364 until his death in AD 375. Renowned for his energetic frontier policy, he strengthened the Rhine and Danube defenses against repeated incursions by the Alemanni, Quadi, and Sarmatians while implementing important administrative and military reforms. Although he appointed his brother Valens as co-emperor in the East, Valentinian retained supreme authority over the Western provinces and maintained relative stability during a turbulent period of Roman history. His extensive bronze coinage promoted themes of imperial security, victory, and public order, reinforcing confidence in the empire through symbolic imagery and carefully crafted inscriptions.

Coinage Note: AE3 bronze issues bearing the reverse legend “SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE” were struck at the Siscia Mint between AD 367 and 375. Catalogued as RIC IX Siscia 15a and LRBC #1489, these coins feature Victory carrying a wreath and palm branch, symbolizing the restoration and preservation of public security. The mintmark “ΔSISC” identifies the fourth officina of the Siscia Mint, making this issue an important example of late fourth-century Roman imperial coinage.
