The Ghaznavid Empire, founded in the late 10th century by Sabuktigin and expanded by Mahmud of Ghazni, became a dominant power across Afghanistan, Iran, and parts of the Indian subcontinent. By the reign of Sultan Ibrahim (1059–1099 AD), the empire had entered a more stable and defensive phase, focusing on consolidation rather than expansion. Ibrahim is noted for his long and relatively peaceful rule, during which diplomatic relations and internal administration were strengthened. Lahore emerged as a key political and economic center during this time, especially as Ghazni’s influence declined due to external pressures from the Seljuks.

The coinage of this period reflects continuity with earlier regional traditions. Billon jitals featuring the bull-and-horseman design were widely circulated, maintaining familiar imagery for local populations while gradually incorporating Islamic elements.
