Description
Kushan Empire, Ruler: Vasudeva I, Reign: 191–232 CE, Denomination: AE Unit, Metal: Copper, Weight: 7.37 grams, Diameter: 21 mm, Reference: Göbl 1019, About Fine, Scarce.
Obverse: Crowned and diademed king standing facing, holding a standard and making a sacrifice at an altar to the left. Brahmi letters appear around the figure, including ha-ra at right, gho (or yo) between the legs, and ga at left.
Reverse: Goddess of prosperity Ardochsho enthroned facing, holding a diadem and cornucopia, symbolizing abundance, wealth, and royal fortune.
Issued during the reign of Vasudeva I, the last great ruler of the Kushan Empire, this copper unit represents a period when Kushan authority remained influential across large parts of northern India, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. Vasudeva I is particularly noted for the increasing Indianization of Kushan culture and coinage, with Brahmi inscriptions becoming more prominent and Indian religious influences growing stronger throughout the empire. Despite these developments, traditional Iranian and Central Asian elements continued to appear on the coinage, as demonstrated by the depiction of the goddess Ardochsho on the reverse. The obverse portrays the king performing a ritual sacrifice before an altar, emphasizing the sacred nature of kingship and the ruler’s role as mediator between the divine and earthly realms. Scholars have noted that the Brahmi monogram on this type should be read as ha-ra rather than hu, based on comparisons with rare Gadahara copper issues bearing identical letter forms. Today, this coin remains an important testament to the multicultural character of the Kushan Empire and the flourishing trade networks that connected India with Central Asia and beyond.
Coinage Note: Copper issues of Vasudeva I circulated extensively in local markets and formed the backbone of everyday commerce throughout the empire. These coins reflect the gradual transition of Kushan monetary traditions toward a more Indianized style while preserving the diverse religious imagery that made Kushan coinage among the most distinctive of the ancient world.
