The Thanjavur Maratha Kingdom was established by the Bhonsle dynasty in the late seventeenth century, with Venkoji (Ekoji) becoming the first Maratha ruler of Thanjavur. The kingdom developed into an important regional power in southern India and remained under Maratha rule until its annexation by the British in 1855. Thanjavur became an important centre of administration, culture, literature and temple patronage under the Maratha rulers.

Coinage Note: This copper Kasu of the Thanjavur Maratha Kingdom. The coin has an irregular round flan and features a distinctive religious design, with three standing deities on the obverse and a standing deity on the reverse.
