Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire, established one of the strongest indigenous states in early nineteenth-century India. Unifying the Sikh misls under his leadership, he expanded his dominion across Punjab, Kashmir, Multan, and Peshawar while maintaining diplomatic relations with neighboring powers. Unlike many contemporary rulers, Ranjit Singh deliberately omitted his own name from most of his coinage, instead dedicating the currency to Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the Sikh faith. The Amritsar Mint, situated near the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), became the principal mint of the Sikh Empire and produced copper, silver, and gold coinage that circulated extensively throughout the kingdom. These issues reflect both the political strength of the Sikh state and its deep religious identity.
Coinage Note: Copper 1 Paisa coins of Amritsar Mint, dated Vikram Samvat, are among the most recognizable copper issues of the Sikh Empire. Bearing devotional Gurmukhi legends instead of the ruler’s personal name, they embody Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s policy of issuing coinage in honor of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Catalogued as KM #7.1, these coins remain important historical artifacts of Sikh numismatics and are highly sought after by collectors of Indian princely and Sikh coinage.
