Few rulers in Indian history have left as profound an impact on the monetary system as Sher Shah Suri. Having displaced the Mughal emperor Humayun in 1540 CE, Sher Shah established the Sur Empire and introduced far-reaching administrative and monetary reforms. His standard silver Rupee, weighing about 178 grains, became the prototype for the Mughal and later Indian currency systems. Struck at important mints throughout the empire, including Pandua in Bengal, these coins facilitated trade and taxation across northern India. Sher Shah also improved roads, postal services, and revenue administration, earning a reputation as one of the greatest reformers of medieval India. His coinage is particularly admired for its elegant bilingual inscriptions and precise weight standards, which influenced Indian monetary history for centuries.

Coinage Note: The Pandua mint of Bengal was among the principal mints of the Sur Empire. Catalogued by Stan Goron and J. P. Goenka as D790, the AH 946 Rupees are scarce and notable for combining Islamic calligraphy with Devanagari elements, reflecting the synthesis of Persian and Indian numismatic traditions under Sher Shah Suri.
