A very scarce and superb-condition specimen of Shams al-Din Iltutmish’s billon Jital, featuring the iconic horseman type and clear Arabic-Nagari legends—an exceptional find rarely seen in this grade.

Iltutmish was the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate who ruled the dynasty from 1211 to 1236 AD. He was one of the slaves of Qutb-ud-din Aibak who later became his Son-in-Law. He conquered Multan and Bengal from contesting rulers, and Ranthambhore and Siwalik from their rulers.
Coinage system under Iltutmish possessed some distinctive features. Iltutmish introduced the silver Tanka and the copper Jital-the two basic coins of the Sultanate period, with a standard weight of 175 grains.
This ‘text and horseman’ type billon Jital showed besides was minted during the reign of Iltutmish. The obverse of the coin stylized horseman with legend ‘Shri’ on left while the reverse of the coin is inscribed with Arabic legend ‘shams al-dunya wa’l din iltutmish al-sultan’.
