This 1/4 Tanga copper coin was issued during the reign of King Luís I of Portugal (1861–1889 CE) for use in Portuguese India, a colonial territory that included Goa, Daman, and Diu. Struck in copper with a weight of 6.35 grams and a diameter of 25.3 mm, the coin reflects Portugal’s long-standing presence in India since the early 16th century. King Luís I, known as “The Popular,” ruled during a period of colonial consolidation. Coins like this circulated widely among local populations and represent the fusion of European and Indian monetary systems under Portuguese colonial rule. A historical piece of Indo-Portuguese legacy.
Coinage Note: During the reign of King Luís I of Portugal (1861-1889 CE), Portuguese India underwent an important monetary transition following the currency reforms of 1880. Earlier coins were struck at the Goa Mint, which closed in 1869. Subsequently, coin production was undertaken at the Calcutta Mint in British India, including the 1881-1888 copper coinage and silver rupee denominations.
King Luís I’s Portuguese Indian coinage included copper denominations of 1/8 Tanga and 1/4 Tanga, alongside silver denominations of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 Rupia. The 1/4 Tanga represented 3 réis and was struck at Calcutta between 1881 and 1888. These coins circulated within Portuguese India, particularly Goa, Daman and Diu, supporting everyday commercial transactions and regional trade. They belonged to the Portuguese Indian monetary system rather than Portugal’s mainland currency system. Their historical significance lies in documenting colonial administration, monetary reform and commercial connections between Portuguese India and British India during the nineteenth century.
