Description
Mughal Empire, Prince Murad Baksh, briefly proclaimed Emperor in 1658 CE, Denomination: 1 Rupee, Composition: Silver, Weight: 11.29 grams, Diameter: 23 mm, Mint: Surat, Date: AH 1068 (1658 AD), Regnal Year: Ahad, Reference: KM#272.3, Grade: About Very Fine, Extremely Rare.
Obverse: Arabic Kalima Shahada elegantly arranged around the names of the four orthodox Khalifas, reflecting Murad Baksh’s distinctive religiously styled coinage.
Reverse: Persian inscription reads “Muhammad Murad Baksh Badshah Ghazi”, proclaiming Murad Baksh as the victorious emperor, with the regnal year and mint details.
Murad Baksh was the third son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and played a significant role in the Mughal succession struggle of 1657–1658. He initially governed Gujarat and formed an alliance with his elder brother Aurangzeb against their brothers Dara Shikoh and Shah Shuja. After defeating Dara’s forces at the Battle of Samugarh, Aurangzeb and Murad Baksh jointly advanced toward Agra. Murad was subsequently imprisoned by Aurangzeb and later executed in 1661. Although his reign was extremely brief, coins issued in his name are important witnesses to the turbulent Mughal succession crisis.
Coinage Note: This rare Silver Rupee of Murad Baksh was struck at the Surat Mint in AH 1068, Ahad Regnal Year (1658 AD). The obverse carries the Kalima Shahada surrounded by the names of the four Khalifas, while the reverse names Muhammad Murad Baksh Badshah Ghazi. The Ahad-year issue is considerably scarcer within Murad Baksh’s short-lived coinage series. Reference: KM#272.3.
