Obverse: Persian inscription “Tanka Akbar Shahi” in elegant calligraphy, accompanied by the Gobindpur mint name, identifying the coin’s imperial authority and place of issue.

Reverse: Ilahi calendar date and month inscription naming Isfandarmuz, corresponding to Pisces, reflecting Akbar’s distinctive solar calendar system.

Jalal-ud-Din Muhammad Akbar (1556-1605 CE) succeeded his father Humayun and established one of the most powerful and administratively organized empires in Indian history. His military campaigns extended Mughal authority across Gujarat, Bengal, Rajputana, Kashmir, and parts of the Deccan. Akbar relied on commanders such as Raja Man Singh, Todar Mal, and Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khana. His administrative reforms, including the mansabdari and revenue systems, strengthened imperial governance, while alliances with Rajput rulers helped consolidate the empire. His reign also produced important monuments such as Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri and witnessed remarkable development in literature, painting, and architecture.

Coinage Note: This scarce copper Dam, weighing 20.60 grams, was struck at the Gobindpur Mint as part of Akbar’s Tanka Akbar Shahi series. Its inscriptions feature the mint name and the Ilahi calendar month Isfandarmuz, associated with Pisces, alongside the Ilahi year designation. Akbar’s copper Dams served everyday commercial needs and circulated alongside silver Rupees and gold Mohurs. The coin’s distinctive calendar references and mint attribution make it an interesting example of Akbar’s monetary reforms and Mughal provincial coinage.
