Reverse: Persian inscription “Hushang Shah al-Sultan” with a distinctive mint mark.

Hisam al-Din Hoshang Shah was the first independent ruler of the Malwa Sultanate and established Mandu as one of the finest capitals of medieval India. During his reign, Malwa emerged as a powerful kingdom renowned for its military strength, architectural achievements, and flourishing trade. Hoshang Shah consolidated the administration, strengthened the provincial economy, and encouraged the expansion of commerce throughout central India. His reign laid the political and cultural foundations upon which the later rulers of Malwa built one of the most prosperous Sultanates of the fifteenth century.

Coinage Note: The copper 1 Fulus of Hoshang Shah, struck at Dar al-Mulk Shadiabad, is catalogued as Mitchiner WI #6 and Goron & Goenka M6. The coins display the Sultan’s name together with the prestigious mint title on the obverse, while the reverse bears “Hushang Shah al-Sultan” accompanied by the characteristic mint mark. These early Malwa copper issues are important examples of the independent coinage introduced during the formative years of the Malwa Sultanate.
