Description
ushan Empire, Ruler: Vima Takto (Soter Megas), Period: Circa. 80–90 CE, Denomination: AE Tetradrachm, Metal: Copper, Weight: 6.80 grams, Diameter: 21 mm, Reference: MAC 2947, About Very Fine, Very Scarce.
Obverse: Diademed and radiate bust of the king facing right, holding sceptre; tamgha behind, dotted border surrounding.
Reverse: King mounted on horse riding right, holding whip or dagger; Greek legend around reading “BACIΛEV BACIΛEVWN CWTHP MEΓAC” (King of Kings, Great Saviour), within dotted border.
This fascinating AE tetradrachm belongs to the transitional period between the late Indo-Scythian and early Kushan monetary traditions during the second half of the 1st century AD. The coin reflects strong Hellenistic influence inherited from earlier Indo-Greek rulers, particularly through the continued use of Greek legends and royal portraiture. The obverse portrays the ruler with radiate crown and sceptre, symbolizing divine authority and sovereignty, while the tamgha placed behind the bust serves as an important dynastic emblem associated with Central Asian nomadic lineages.
The reverse depicts the king on horseback, a powerful symbol of steppe warrior culture and military dominance. The title “Basileus Basileon Soter Megas” translates as “King of Kings, Great Saviour,” emphasizing imperial prestige and supreme rulership. Coins of this type are historically significant as they illustrate the fusion of Greek, Iranian, and Central Asian artistic traditions that characterized the political landscape of northwestern India and Bactria during the early Kushan era.
