Description
British India, King: Edward VII, Reign: 1901–1910 CE, Years of Minting: 1906–1910 CE, Denomination: ¼ Anna (1⁄64 Rupee), Metal: Bronze, Weight: 6.52 grams, Diameter: 25.3 mm, Reference: KM# 502, About Exta Fine (UNC).
Obverse: Right-facing bust of King Edward VII with the surrounding legend “EDWARD VII KING & EMPEROR,” engraved by George William de Saulles in a formal imperial style.
Reverse: Denomination “ONE QUARTER ANNA INDIA” arranged within a beaded circle, with the date below and surrounded by an ornamental wreath design.
Issued during the reign of King Edward VII, the Quarter Anna bronze coin formed an important part of the everyday currency system of British India in the early twentieth century. Following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, Edward VII became Emperor of India, and his portrait was introduced across the coinage of the British Empire to symbolize the continuity of Crown authority over colonial territories. The Quarter Anna served as a low-denomination coin widely used in local markets, village trade, transportation payments, and daily purchases among ordinary people throughout the subcontinent. Struck in bronze and produced primarily at the Calcutta Mint, the coin reflects the highly structured monetary framework established under British administration. Its large size, clear denomination, and decorative wreath design made it practical and easily recognizable in circulation. These coins circulated during a period of expanding railways, commercial growth, and increasing economic integration across British India. Following Edward VII’s death in 1910, his coinage was replaced by issues bearing the portrait of King George V. Today, the Edward VII Quarter Anna remains a historically important collectible, representing the final years of the Edwardian era and the mature phase of British India’s colonial monetary system.
