During the reign of Jalal ud-Din Muhammad Akbar (1556–1605), the Lahore Mint played a vital role in producing copper coinage for the Mughal Empire. Lahore, a prominent administrative and economic hub, was one of Akbar’s key mints, known for striking copper Dams used widely in daily transactions. These coins, often inscribed with the Islamic year and mint name “Dar al-Sultanate Lahore,” reflected imperial control and regional identity. Akbar reformed the coinage system by standardizing weights—this Dam weighs ~20g—and introduced mints across major cities to strengthen fiscal governance and unify currency across his vast empire.
