Obverse: Elaborate Nizam’s Tughra displays the numeral 92, representing “Muhammad,” with the title Asaf Jah Nizam Al-Mulk Bahadur and AH Year below.

Reverse: Urdu inscription “دو پایء” appears within a central circle, surrounded by the Hyderabad mint legend and regnal year inscription.

Mir Osman Ali Khan Asaf Jah VII ruled the princely state of Hyderabad from 1911 to 1948 and was the seventh Nizam of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. During his reign, Hyderabad developed important modern institutions and infrastructure, including railways, roads, electricity, irrigation projects, and public services. He founded Osmania University in 1917, where Urdu was initially adopted as the medium of higher education, with modern disciplines including medicine, engineering, science, and law. His period also witnessed expansion of education, industry, agriculture, and administrative institutions. Hyderabad maintained its own currency, mint, postal system, and other state institutions under the Nizam’s government.

Coinage Note: This bronze 2 Pai was struck at the Hyderabad Mint in AH 1330-1349 (1912-1931 CE), during the 19th regnal year of Mir Osman Ali Khan. The coin features sophisticated Urdu calligraphy, the Nizam’s Tughra, denomination, Hyderabad mint name, and regnal formula. As a small-denomination circulation coin, the Pai served everyday commercial transactions within the Hyderabad State’s monetary system. The issue reflects the independent administrative and monetary traditions maintained by the Nizam.
