Jivaji Rao Scindia was the last ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Gwalior, one of the most important Maratha states under British paramountcy in India. The Scindia dynasty, originally rising under the Maratha Confederacy during the 18th century, controlled a large and economically significant territory in central India. During Jivaji Rao’s reign, Gwalior experienced political modernization while remaining under indirect British influence until Indian independence. The coinage of Gwalior retained strong regional identity through the use of Devanagari and Urdu inscriptions instead of English legends commonly seen on British Indian issues. These copper fractional denominations circulated widely in local markets and reflected the semi-autonomous monetary traditions maintained by princely states alongside imperial currency systems during the late colonial period.
The copper ¼ Anna issues of Gwalior were struck in both thin and thick planchet varieties, with noticeable differences in weight and fabric. Coins were dated according to the Vikram Samvat calendar and featured the state arms prominently on the reverse. Their crude portrait style and bilingual inscriptions make them distinctive and highly collectible among enthusiasts of Indian princely state coinage.
