Sultan Mahmud III was the last effective ruler of the Gujarat Sultanate before the kingdom entered a period of political instability and increasing Mughal pressure. Ascending the throne after the death of Bahadur Shah, he inherited a vast realm stretching from Gujarat into Malwa. During his reign, Malwa remained under Gujarati control and served as an important provincial center where copper fulus coinage was struck for everyday circulation. Contemporary chroniclers record that factional struggles among nobles weakened the administration, eventually paving the way for the Mughal conquest under Emperor Akbar a few decades later. Despite the political turmoil, Mahmud III’s coinage continued the established Islamic traditions and reflected the authority of the Gujarat Sultanate over central India.

Coinage Note: Copper falus of Mahmud III struck at Malwa are scarce issues intended for local commerce. Catalogued as G&G #215, these coins bear the ruler’s name and titles in elegant Arabic script and represent one of the final indigenous coinages issued under the independent Gujarat Sultanate before the Mughal annexation of Gujarat in 1573.
