“This specimen displays a sharply struck obverse with clear dotted borders and a complete legend. The reverse features a well-defined horse surrounded by Devanagari inscription. Coins of such attractive strike, clarity, and preservation are rarely encountered in this grade”
Taj al-Din Yildiz was a prominent military commander who emerged as a key contender for power after the Ghurid Empire collapse. Originally a trusted slave-general of Muhammad of Ghor, he seized control of Ghazni and later extended his authority into the Punjab and Lahore region. His rule was marked by continuous conflicts with rival powers, particularly Qutb al-Din Aibak and his successors. Yildiz attempted to legitimize his authority through royal titles and coinage, but ultimately failed to withstand the expanding dominance of the Delhi Sultanate.
This billon jital of the Lahore mint represents a transitional phase, blending Islamic and Indian elements. The horseman and “Sri Hamira” reflect local traditions, while the Arabic inscription asserts royal authority. Scarce in availability, the coin highlights the political instability and cultural adaptation of the early 13th century.
