Ala al-Din Muhammad Shah Khalji was one of the most powerful rulers of the Delhi Sultanate and played a major role in expanding imperial authority across the Indian subcontinent during the late 13th and early 14th centuries. His reign was marked by military campaigns into Gujarat, Rajasthan, and the Deccan, along with strong administrative reforms related to taxation, market regulation, and military organization. He also successfully resisted repeated Mongol invasions, strengthening the political stability of the Sultanate. Coinage issued during his rule reflected growing economic power and centralized administration. The widespread circulation of Jitals in local markets demonstrates the importance of low-denomination currency within medieval Indian commerce. His issues remain historically important as symbols of the economic and territorial peak of the Khalji Dynasty.
The Jital coinage of Ala al-Din Khalji formed a major part of the Delhi Sultanate monetary system and circulated extensively in everyday trade. Struck in billon using hammered technique, these coins typically carried bold Arabic inscriptions emphasizing royal authority and Islamic legitimacy. Large quantities were produced from several mints, making the series one of the most extensive medieval coinages of the Sultanate period.
