Issued during the reign of Queen Victoria, this coin belongs to the early period of standardised British Indian coinage following the transfer of administration from the East India Company to the British Crown in 1858. Victoria became Empress of India in 1876, symbolising the consolidation of imperial authority over the subcontinent. Her long reign witnessed major changes in administration, transport, trade, and the monetary system. The ½ Pice served as a small-value denomination for everyday purchases and local market transactions, representing 1/128 of a rupee. Copper coinage was essential for ordinary commerce, particularly among people requiring small change. These early issues reflect the development of a more uniform colonial currency across British-controlled India.
Coinage Note: This ½ Pice type was issued between 1862 and 1875, with recorded minting at Calcutta and Madras. The two mint varieties can be distinguished by diameter: Calcutta examples generally measure approximately 21.0–21.25 mm, while Madras examples measure around 21.4 mm. The coin weighs approximately 3–3.40 grams and features Queen Victoria’s crowned portrait on the obverse and an ornamental wreath on the reverse. Referenced as KM# 466, it is a collectible example of nineteenth-century British Indian copper coinage.
