Queen Victoria (1819-1901 CE) became Queen of the United Kingdom on 20 June 1837, succeeding her uncle, King William IV, and was crowned in 1838. She reigned for 63 years until death in 1901. In 1876, she was formally given the title Empress of India, proclaimed at the Imperial Assemblage in Delhi in 1877. Victoria never visited India. From 1858, after East India Company rule ended, India came under the British Crown, administered through the Viceroy and British Raj. Her reign witnessed expansion of railways, telegraph, education, and colonial administration. The Victoria Memorial in Calcutta was built after her death to commemorate her. Victoria died at Osborne House and was buried at Frogmore Mausoleum, Windsor. Her son Edward VII succeeded her.

Coinage Note: During Queen Victoria’s reign, British India issued gold, silver, and copper coinage in an imperial monetary system. The copper ¼ Anna, equal to 1/64 Rupee, bearing the legend “VICTORIA QUEEN,” was introduced in 1862. This type was struck from 1862 to 1876, with production at the Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras mints. In 1862, all three mints produced the denomination; Bombay resumed production in 1875 to 1876, while Calcutta produced it during 1874–1876. The obverse features Victoria’s crowned bust facing left, while the reverse carries “ONE QUARTER ANNA INDIA” with the date inside a beaded circle and wreath. Catalogue reference: KM#467.
