Description

Pre-Gupta Western Kshatrapas, Kardamaka Dynasty, Viradaman (c. 234-238 CE), Denomination: AR Drachm, Composition: Silver, Weight: 2.45 grams, Diameter: Approxemtly 14 to 15 mm, Shape: Round (Irregular), Reference: AMF #21.1, about very fine, rare.

Obverse: Profile bust of King Viradaman facing right, wearing a flat cap and earrings, with a corrupt Greek legend surrounding the portrait and the date expressed in numerals behind the bust.
Reverse: Three-arched hill (Chaitya) at the centre, surmounted by a crescent and flanked by the Sun and Moon, with a wavy river line below and a circular Brahmi legend in Prakrit naming the ruler and his royal lineage.
Viradaman belonged to the Kardamaka dynasty of the Western Kshatrapas, a powerful Saka ruling house that governed parts of western and central India. He was the son of Mahakshatrapa Damasena and held the title Kshatrapa during his rule, approximately 234-238 CE. The Western Kshatrapas maintained their political authority across regions of Gujarat, Malwa, and Saurashtra, controlling important trade routes and prosperous commercial centres. Their coinage is particularly notable for its distinctive portrait busts, dated issues, and bilingual numismatic traditions, combining Greek-derived legends on the obverse with Prakrit inscriptions in Brahmi script on the reverse.
Coinage Note: This silver Drachm of Viradaman was issued in Saka Era 160 (238 CE), during his tenure as Kshatrapa. The reverse legend identifies him as the son of Mahakshatrapa Damasena and records his royal title. The characteristic Chaitya symbol, crescent, Sun, Moon, and river motif represent the established iconographic tradition of Western Kshatrapa coinage. These silver Drachms circulated widely in western India and reflect the dynasty’s monetary system and commercial influence.
