Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan Multan Mint – Mughal Empire Silver One Rupee Coin

Obverse: Arabic-Persian inscription “Badshah Ghazi Shah Jahan Sahib Qiran Sani” Zarb Multan, 23 Regnal Year, arranged within a square-shaped central design surrounded by decorative calligraphy.

Reverse: The Islamic Kalima, “La ilaha illa Allah Muhammadur Rasul Allah,” appears in elegant Arabic script alongside the Hijri date (Out of Flan), surrounded by an ornamental border.

Shahab-ud-Din Muhammad Shah Jahan (r. 1628-1658 CE) was the fifth Mughal emperor and son of Jahangir. His reign marked a high point in Mughal architecture, artistic achievement, and imperial grandeur. He commissioned celebrated monuments, including the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort in Delhi, and the Jama Masjid. Shah Jahan expanded and strengthened the empire through military campaigns in the Deccan and northwestern regions, while maintaining an elaborate imperial administration. His court became renowned for its wealth, refined craftsmanship, and magnificent buildings. However, prolonged military expenditure and succession conflicts weakened the empire toward the end of his reign, culminating in his deposition by his son Aurangzeb in 1658.

Coinage Note: This silver Rupee was struck at the Multan Mint during Regnal Year 23 (RY 23), corresponding to AH 1059-1060 (1649-1650 CE). Its Arabic-Persian inscriptions record Shah Jahan’s imperial titles, while the reverse carries the Islamic Kalima and Hijri date. Multan was an important provincial centre within the Mughal Empire, and its coinage reflects the standardized silver Rupee system that supported taxation, trade, and commercial transactions across the empire.
