Obverse: Ashoka Lion Capital appears above the denomination, with bilingual Devanagari and Latin inscriptions reading “भारत INDIA” and “रुपया 1 RUPEE.” The diamond mint mark of the Bombay Mint appears below the date.

Reverse: Left-facing bust of Jawaharlal Nehru surrounded by the Latin inscription “JAWAHARLAL NEHRU,” with his lifetime dates 1889–1964 below.

Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s first Prime Minister, serving from 15 August 1947 until 27 May 1964. Born in Allahabad in 1889, he studied in England before returning to India and joining the independence movement. He became an important leader of the Indian National Congress, presided over the Lahore Session of 1929, and was imprisoned several times during the freedom struggle. As Prime Minister, he played a central role in shaping the institutions and policies of newly independent India.

Coinage Note: This 1 Rupee commemorative coin was issued in 1964 following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru. Struck in nickel, it features the Ashoka Lion Capital and denomination on the obverse, while his portrait and dates appear on the reverse. The  diamond mint mark identifies the Bombay Mint (Mumbai), distinguishing this specimen from examples struck at other Indian mints.
