Akbar’s square silver rupees belong to one of the most distinctive and intellectually significant phases of Mughal coinage. In the later years of his reign, the traditional Islamic dating and Kalima were replaced on selected issues by the Ilahi system and the formula “Allahu Akbar Jalla Jalaluhu”, reflecting the emperor’s broader religious and philosophical experiments. The Ahmedabad Mint produced these remarkable hand-struck square rupees during the Ilahi period, combining bold Persian calligraphy with an unusual geometric flan.
