Raghunatha Nayaka was one of the most distinguished rulers of the Thanjavur Nayak Kingdom, reigning from 1600 to 1634 CE. A capable administrator, military leader, and patron of art, literature, music, and temple architecture, he transformed Thanjavur into a flourishing cultural center in South India. His reign witnessed close interactions with European trading companies while maintaining the political strength of the Nayak state. The coinage issued under his authority frequently reflected his deep devotion to Hindu traditions, with religious imagery appearing prominently alongside royal representations. These bronze Kasu coins circulated widely in local markets and served as an important medium of everyday commerce throughout the kingdom.
Coinage Note: Bronze 1 Kasu coins of Raghunatha Nayaka are among the most recognizable issues of the Thanjavur Nayaks. The depiction of Lord Rama with Hanuman on the obverse reflects the king’s Vaishnavite faith, while the standing royal figure on the reverse symbolizes sovereign authority. These coins are important examples of South Indian temple-state coinage and remain highly desirable among collectors of Nayak and medieval Indian numismatics.
