The closing decades of the third century CE witnessed the continuation of Western Satrap authority under Bhartrdaman, son of Mahakshatrapa Rudrasena II. Following the long-established traditions of the dynasty, Bhartrdaman initially ruled as Kshatrapa before assuming the higher title of Mahakshatrapa. His silver drachms retained the familiar portrait style inherited from earlier rulers and the sacred chaitya reverse that had become the hallmark of Western Satrap coinage. These issues circulated throughout Gujarat, Kathiawar, and Malwa, regions that prospered through inland trade and maritime connections with the Arabian Sea. The reign of Bhartrdaman belongs to a period when the Western Satraps still exercised considerable influence in western India despite the gradual emergence of rival powers. Surviving coins provide valuable evidence for reconstructing the chronology of the dynasty and remain among the most important numismatic sources for the history of the late Indo-Scythian rulers.
Coinage Note: Type I drachms depict Bhartrdaman with the title Kshatrapa, while later issues bear the title Mahakshatrapa. His coins are important for understanding the succession and chronology of the late Western Satrap dynasty and are extensively catalogued by Rapson, Mitchiner, and modern scholars of Indian numismatics.
