Description
Jodhpur State, Sardar Singh (VS1952-1968/1895-1911 CE), Denomination: 1/4 Anna, Composition: Jodhpur Mint, INO Edward VII, Obv: Edward VII inscription, Nagari ‘Ma’, Rev: Sardar Singh Inscription, Date Top, Weight: 10.09 grams, Diameter: 19.37 mm, (KM #91), About Very Fine, Scarce.
Sardar Singh ruled the princely state of Jodhpur from 1895 to 1911 CE, a period marked by close political alignment with the British Raj. He ascended the throne after the assassination of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, and governed under British supervision during a phase of administrative consolidation and infrastructural development. Railways, postal systems, and modern governance practices expanded in Marwar under his reign, reflecting the broader imperial framework of late 19th–early 20th century India. Sardar Singh maintained loyalty to the British Crown, which ensured stability but also limited sovereign autonomy.
The coinage of Jodhpur during his reign clearly reflects this political reality. The 1/4 Anna issue struck at the Jodhpur Mint bears the name and authority of Edward VII, emphasizing British paramountcy. At the same time, local identity is preserved through Nagari elements and Sardar Singh’s inscription on the reverse. Dated 1906, this copper coin represents the fusion of imperial control with princely tradition, making it a scarce and historically significant numismatic issue.
