The Yaudheyas were a powerful warrior republic (gana-sangha) of northern India, flourishing mainly between the 1st century BCE and 3rd century CE, with their core territory in present-day Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Rajasthan. Their name derives from yodha (warrior), reflecting their strong Kshatriya martial identity and republican political structure.
The Yaudheyas are best known through their copper coinage issued mainly during the early centuries CE, prominently depicting the war-god Kartikeya (Skanda) with his spear and peacock. The Brahmi legend “Yaudheya Ganasya Jaya” (“Victory of the Yaudheya Republic”) symbolizes their military pride and collective sovereignty.
Numismatic and inscriptional evidence indicates that the Yaudheyas actively resisted Indo-Greek, Scythian, and Kushan powers, and at times asserted regional autonomy. By the 3rd–4th century CE, they were gradually absorbed into larger imperial frameworks, while retaining their cultural and martial legacy.
