This copper paisa was issued during the reign of Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of the Awadh Princely State, who ruled from AH 1263–1272 (1847–1856 AD). His coinage reflects the rich artistic culture of Lucknow, a city known for its poetry, dance, and refinement. The obverse shows a crown beneath a royal parasol, flanked by mermaids—symbolizing protection, creativity, and royal grandeur—while crossed swords represent sovereignty. The reverse bears the Nawab’s inscription and epithet. These coins were struck at the Lucknow Mint and are considered rare today.
