Krishnadevaraya was the most powerful and celebrated ruler of the Tuluva Dynasty of the Vijayanagar Empire. His reign (1509–1529 CE) is widely regarded as the “Golden Age” of Vijayanagar. He achieved major military successes against the Gajapati rulers of Odisha, the Bijapur Sultanate, and the remnants of the Bahmani states, thereby consolidating Vijayanagar’s dominance over large parts of South India. His rule was also marked by great patronage of temples, art, literature, and trade. He maintained diplomatic and commercial relations with the Portuguese, which further strengthened the empire’s economy and maritime connections.

The copper coinage of Krishnadevaraya is best known for its dynamic Garuda motif, symbolizing royal authority, dharma, and divine protection. This specimen exhibits a clearly defined Garuda and a well-legible Nagari legend, supporting its authenticity and quality. The Mitch K&A 657 type is considered comparatively scarce, making well-preserved examples in Very Fine grade particularly desirable among collectors.
