Description
Mysore Kingdom, Tipu Sultan, (AM1215-1227/1787-1799AD), Faiz Hisar Mint, Copper 1/4 Paisa (Akhtar), Obv: Persian “TE” above elephant, Rev: Mint faiz hisar, 2.20 grams, 11.97 mm, (KM 41.5), About Very Fine, Rare.
This copper ¼ Paisa (Akhtar) was issued during the reign of Tipu Sultan, the formidable ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, between AH 1215–1227 (1787–1799 AD). Struck at the Faiz Hisar mint, Tipu Sultan’s capital at Srirangapatna, this coin reflects his strong administrative reforms and distinctive monetary system. Tipu introduced a unique calendar, new regnal years, and symbolic coin designs to assert sovereignty and resist European influence, particularly that of the British East India Company.
The elephant motif on the obverse symbolizes royal power and military strength, while the Persian inscription emphasizes Islamic authority and centralized governance. Copper fractional denominations like this Akhtar were widely used in daily market transactions. Coins from Tipu Sultan’s reign are historically significant and highly sought after, especially well-preserved and rare varieties such as this example.
