Shams ud-Din Iltutmish, one of the greatest rulers of the Delhi Sultanate’s Mamluk (Slave) Dynasty, reigned from 1210 to 1235 AD and firmly consolidated Muslim rule in North India. Originally a Turkish slave purchased by Qutb ud-Din Aibak, he rose through merit to become Sultan and established a strong centralized administration. Iltutmish successfully suppressed rival nobles, defeated dangerous rebellions, and repelled Mongol threats, securing the empire’s stability. He completed major architectural works like the Qutub Minar’s expansion and introduced a well-defined monetary system. His Jital coins—featuring the famous bull-and-horseman design with Nagari legend Sri Hamira—reflect his control over former Rajput territories. These coins are historically significant and extremely scarce today.
