Reverse: FORTVNA REDVX – Fortuna standing left, draped, holding rudder in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand.

Gallienus ruled the Roman Empire during one of its most unstable and fragmented eras, commonly known as the Crisis of the Third Century. His reign was marked by relentless external threats from Germanic and Gothic invasions, along with frequent internal rebellions by usurpers across the provinces. These pressures severely strained imperial finances and military resources, leading to administrative reforms and changes in coinage.

The antoninianus of Gallienus, struck at the Rome mint, reflects the economic realities of the mid-3rd century, particularly the heavy debasement of silver content in billon issues. The reverse type FORTVNA REDVX, depicting the goddess Fortuna holding a rudder and cornucopiae, symbolized hopes for divine guidance, stability, and the emperor’s safe return from campaigns. Such imagery served as imperial propaganda, reinforcing confidence in the emperor’s leadership during uncertainty. Despite criticism by later historians, Gallienus implemented important military reforms and helped preserve imperial continuity during a deeply troubled period.
