Obverse: Ashoka lion capital centered with country name in Devanagari ‘भारत’ and Latin ‘INDIA’ on either side. 

Reverse: Denomination “1” above mint year, with Devanagari legends “रूपये का सौवाँ भाग” (meaning “One-hundredth of a Rupee”) above “नया पैसा” and the year “19xx.”

Issued during the early decades of the Republic of India, the 1 Paisa bronze coin of 1957–1962 represents India’s transition to a modern decimal monetary system. Introduced after decimalisation in 1957, 100 Naye Paise were made equal to one Rupee, replacing the older Anna-based system inherited from British rule.

The obverse features the Ashoka Lion Capital, adopted from the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka’s pillar at Sarnath, symbolising sovereignty, unity, and ethical governance in the newly independent nation. Bilingual inscriptions in Devanagari and Latin scripts reflect India’s cultural diversity and administrative inclusivity.

The reverse clearly explains the value as “One-hundredth of a Rupee,” educating the public during the early years of decimal currency usage. Struck in bronze, this small denomination was widely used in daily transactions and played a key role in familiarising citizens with India’s post-independence economic reforms.
