Rebellion Issue of Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir) Mughal Empire Silver Rupee Allahabad Mint

Mughal Empire, Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir), Rebellion Issue, Composition: Silver, Denomination: AR Rupee, Weight: 11.30 grams, Diameter: 22 mm, Allahabad Mint, ‘Hamisha’ Couplet Type, Reference: KM # 97.1, Very Fine, Very Scarce.

Obverse: Persian poetic couplet with mint reference, without the ruler’s name  “Hamesha hamchu zar mihr wa mah raij bad.”

Reverse: “Baghrub wa sharq jahan sikka Allahabad.”

This silver rupee belongs to the rebellion coinage of Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir) struck at Allahabad between 1600–1604 CE, when he declared independent authority while rebelling against his father, Emperor Akbar. During this period Salim established his own court at Allahabad and issued coins reflecting his control over the region.

Unlike regular Mughal issues, these coins do not display the ruler’s name but instead feature a Persian poetic couplet symbolizing sovereignty and legitimacy. The inscription translates roughly as: “Like the gold of the sun and moon may it always shine; from the west to the east of the world, the coin of Allahabad.”

Because these rupees were struck for a short and politically sensitive period, they are considered historically important rebellion issues and are very scarce within Mughal numismatics.
